Membrane filtration technique is basically used for determining the microbiologic load of drinking water and other liquid samples. It is appropriate to work with high volume samples and its results are faster and more reliable when compared with conventional methods.
In this method, samples are passed through a membrane filter by using a vacuum system. Any organisms in the sample are concentrated on the surface of the membrane. The filter is placed on to a sterile absorbent pad that is absorbed a medium chosen according to the needs. Counting can be done after incubation by the help of the squares on the filter.
Membrane Filtration Kits contain a petri dish together with membrane filter, absorbent pad and liquid broth media. All of the components in the kit are supplied as sterilized in order to ensure reliable results.
