Intended Use

Procalcitonin Rapid Card Test is an in vitro diagnostic test to semi-quantitatively assess Procalcitonin in human serum samples. It can give results in less than 20 minutes. It is possible to obtain quantitative results when used with the card test reader, specially programmed for this test.

General Information

Procalcitonin, which is a peptide formed of 116 amino acids, is the precursor molecule of Calcitonin hormone. This molecule is secreted by thyroid, lung and intestine cells.  The amount of procalcitonin present in the circulatory system of healthy people is very much below the detection levels of clinical test methods. The level of Procalcitonin increases especially in response to a bacterial proinflamatory stimulus. No significant increase is observed during viral infections or non-infectious inflammations. Procalcitonin amount man increase up to 100 ng/ml due to serious infections and systematic response.

Measurement of procalcitonin levels are used as a marker of serious sepsis and levels of sepsis. Additionally, differentiating bacterial and viral infections and correct antibiotic treatment or preventing unnecessary antibiotic usage is its other advantages.
